Treatment from a Facility that Cares

Making the decision to attend treatment may be scary enough for some people, let alone actually following through by attending and doing what it takes to get sober. Drug and alcohol addiction have more than likely taken a toll on the lives of those facing this battle. The addiction has infiltrated the majority, if not all, aspects of their lives. So, going to treatment where the staff is both trustworthy and compassionate is important.

At AdCare Treatment Centers, patients are provided with exceptional care in a supportive environment. Located in the New England area, there are several AdCare facilities throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. They are blanketed under the parent company American Addiction Centers, which is a nationwide leader in addiction treatment.

As a matter of fact, Dr. Michael Coburn is the medical director at AdCare. He works from a place of compassion because he faced his own obstacles with addiction, has worked through them, and is now helping others to do the same.

“I didn’t start in the field of addiction medicine. My training is actually in surgery. I was a general vascular bariatric surgeon for twenty-two years before facing my own problems with substance use disorder. And when I returned from treatment and engaged in recovery, I decided to change careers and give back to what was so generously given to me,” said Dr. Coburn.

Patients won’t meet a more compassionate, understanding, and giving physician. When he spoke about why he does what he does for a living, he went on to say, “I do it partially out of interest in the work and also partially to give back to a community that’s been so helpful to me.”

Although it’s not a requirement to have personally experienced addiction before becoming a medical doctor who works with patients that battle the same disorders, it is a helpful perspective to have. “I understand what they’ve been through, what they’re going through, and I think they appreciate the fact that I understand them. I don’t think you necessarily need to be in recovery to be a substance abuse doctor, but it certainly doesn’t hurt,” Dr. Coburn shared.

When patients first come to AdCare, Dr. Coburn:

  • Performs most of the physicals and histories on patients. It’s important that patients are seen within 24 hours of admission.
  • Manages chronic illnesses while patients are admitted.
  • Manages any acute problems that may develop, such as dental problems, infections, and skin rashes.
  • Manages medication assisted treatment.

Dr. Coburn believes that “AAC is very committed to these patients.” He went on to say, “I’ve never seen such enormous commitment from a parent company in my life towards its clientele, if you will. We are in constant contact with the call center. They are very appropriately aggressive with getting patients into treatment that need treatment. It takes a lot of work to convince patients to come to treatment and AAC is incredibly committed to that.”

Taking the step towards treatment may be scary. And battling a drug or alcohol addiction may be equally as scary. It’s great to know there is an opportunity to get help without judgement in order to live a life of long-term sobriety. And that option is offered at AdCare.
