Some examples of outpatient addiction treatment goals include the following:
- Increase knowledge about substance use disorder and the recovery process.
- Maintain abstinence by building the necessary recovery skills.
- Increase physical and emotional stability while living a sober lifestyle.
- Develop a recovery support community.
- Assist significant others and other family members in coping with the impact of addiction on relationships.
Outpatient treatment programs for addiction do not have a set length of time. Instead, each person spends the amount of time in outpatient treatment that is right for them and their recovery needs.
This may mean that some people spend a month in an outpatient program and others spend several months. What matters is that each person continues to attend outpatient treatment for the amount of time they need to build and practice recovery skills for long-term sobriety.
Each person’s addiction treatment plan should be customized according to their individual needs by a trained medical professional. Starting addiction treatment at the outpatient level may be appropriate for some people but it does not provide adequate support for everyone at the start of addiction treatment.
In cases when a person may not need a supervised medical detox, or they have already completed one, outpatient rehab might be an option. However, for a person who is actively using alcohol, benzodiazepines, sedatives, opioids, or a combination of substances, inpatient care would be more appropriate to ensure their safety and comfort during withdrawal.
An outpatient addiction treatment program may be recommended when a person is stepping down from a medical detox or inpatient treatment.
In some situations, admission to an outpatient rehab program may be an option for those who have struggled with their use of the following substances:
- Marijuana
- Hallucinogens (salvia, LSD, etc.)
- Inhalants (whippets, solvents, nitrous oxide, etc.)
- Stimulants (cocaine, meth, amphetamines, etc.)
Each person’s addiction treatment needs vary and the support they receive should match where they are in their recovery journey. Additionally, as they progress in their recovery, their treatment needs will change.
In certain cases, starting addiction treatment at an outpatient level of care may not be recommended. This is because a person may require more support than an outpatient rehab program can provide.
For example, if a person is actively using substances that can pose medical risks when stopped, supervised medical detox with withdrawal management would provide the support needed to ensure the person’s safety.
