Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Addiction
New England Partial Hospitalization Program
Our day treatment program for addiction, known as a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) outside of Massachusetts, offers a unique opportunity for individuals seeking to recover while maintaining a sense of normalcy in their daily lives. This program allows participants to engage in comprehensive therapeutic interventions and support services during the day without the need for overnight stays at an inpatient facility. Clients receive personalized care that includes group therapy, individual counseling, and various holistic activities designed to address the complexities of addiction. This structure not only fosters a supportive community among participants but also equips them with essential coping skills to navigate their recovery journey effectively. By providing a safe and nurturing environment, the program helps individuals transition back into their everyday lives while still receiving the essential support they need on their path to recovery.
What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), often referred to as “day treatment” in Massachusetts, represents the most intensive level of outpatient addiction treatment available.1 Within this structured program, individuals maintain their residence at home while attending the rehab facility for focused treatment sessions. At AdCare, our day treatment program is designed to run on weekday mornings, featuring three-hour sessions that provide a comprehensive approach to recovery.
The content of these sessions is diverse and dynamic, much like other treatment modalities in the field of addiction recovery. Participants engage in both group and individual therapy, allowing for a personalized and supportive environment. Evidence-based treatment approaches are central to the PHP experience and may include various components such as:
Behavioral Therapies
These therapies aim to modify harmful behaviors and thought patterns associated with addiction, empowering individuals to develop healthier coping mechanisms.
Psychoeducation
This component involves providing valuable information about addiction, recovery processes, and the potential impact of substance use on mental and physical health, helping participants to understand their condition better.
Peer Support Meetings
These gatherings offer participants a chance to share their experiences, challenges, and successes in recovery with others who are navigating similar paths, fostering a sense of community and shared understanding.
Through these varied session topics and therapeutic modalities, the PHP at AdCare aims to equip individuals with the tools and support necessary for lasting recovery.
Difference Between PHP and IOP
The distinction between a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), often referred to as day treatment, and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) primarily lies in the level of treatment intensity provided. A PHP typically offers around 15 hours of structured therapeutic activities and support each week, focusing on a comprehensive approach that might include individual therapy, group sessions, and psychoeducation. This higher level of care is designed for individuals who need significant support while still being able to return home each evening.
On the other hand, an IOP is less intensive, typically involving about 9 hours of programming weekly. This format is suitable for individuals who have made progress in their recovery but still require ongoing support to maintain their sobriety and avoid relapse. IOPs often emphasize flexibility, allowing participants to manage their treatment alongside work or other daily responsibilities.
Transitioning between different levels of care is a common practice in recovery, enabling treatment to correspond with an individual’s changing needs. For instance, someone may “step down” from a more intensive inpatient rehab program to a PHP as they begin to stabilize and require less rigorous support. As an individual continues to progress in their recovery journey, they may further step down to an IOP, reflecting their growing autonomy and readiness to engage more independently in their rehab efforts. This gradation of care is crucial in providing tailored support that evolves with the individual’s recovery process, ensuring they receive the appropriate level of care at each stage.
The Day Treatment Program at AdCare Worcester
AdCare’s day treatment program is offered at the Worcester, MA, outpatient location. Day treatment takes places Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.–12 p.m. A light breakfast and nutritious lunch are served each day, and transportation is available for local residents (living within 15 miles of the treatment center).

What to Expect in a PHP
A day treatment or partial hospitalization program for addiction offers a structured and intensive approach to recovery, incorporating a variety of therapeutic sessions that include behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, and peer-support group meetings.
Throughout these sessions, participants are provided with valuable insights into the complexities of substance use disorders. They learn to recognize their personal triggers and develop crucial coping strategies that are essential for maintaining long-term sobriety.
The treatment modalities used in these programs are diverse and tailored to meet individual needs, including:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
This evidence-based approach focuses on identifying and modifying negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with addiction. Patients learn to challenge distorted thinking and replace it with healthier responses.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Particularly effective for individuals with co-occurring emotional issues, DBT combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices. It emphasizes emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness, allowing individuals to manage stress and improve relationships.
Motivational Interviewing
This client-centered counseling style aims to enhance an individual’s motivation to change by helping them explore and resolve ambivalence. By fostering a supportive environment, individuals can articulate their own reasons for recovery.
Group Therapy
This therapeutic format provides a sense of community and shared experience among participants. It allows individuals to connect with others facing similar challenges, fostering support and accountability.
Family Systems Therapy
Recognizing that addiction affects not only the individual but also their family dynamics, this therapy engages family members in the recovery process. It aims to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships within the family unit.
12-Step Groups
These groups provide a structured approach to recovery, following the principles of the 12-step recovery model. Participants learn from one another and share their experiences, which reinforces the sense of fellowship and support critical to sustained recovery.
By integrating these various therapeutic approaches, day treatment and partial hospitalization programs equip individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary for a successful transition to a sober lifestyle.
