What Is Outpatient Addiction Treatment?

Outpatient addiction treatment is a type of rehab patients attend during the day or in the evening while residing at home. An outpatient rehab program may be the right choice for someone who does not require 24-hour care.

It is common for patients to move between levels of care as their treatment plan changes over time. Many transfer to an outpatient program from a more intensive level of treatment such as medical detox or inpatient care.

Outpatient addiction treatment services can include:

How Long Does Outpatient Treatment Last?

The length of time each person spends in outpatient treatment varies from person to person. Our addiction treatment centers in New England offer short-term rehab programs, month-long addiction treatment programs, and long-term addiction treatment options and aftercare services.

These flexible options ensure patients remain in treatment for the length of time that is right for them and allows them to recover at their own pace.

The first step in developing your individualized addiction treatment plan is a thorough assessment and evaluation. Our experienced clinicians work with you to determine the ideal level of care for your needs.

All AdCare outpatient locations offer a standard outpatient program and an intensive outpatient program (IOP). AdCare’s outpatient facility in Worcester, MA, also offers day treatment. This is a more intensive outpatient level of care that is known as a partial hospitalization program outside of Massachusetts.

A standard outpatient program typically involves attending treatment 1-2 times a week. This may involve individual therapy or group therapy sessions depending on your treatment plan.

Intensive Outpatient Programs

Patients can attend intensive outpatient rehab programs up to 5 days a week or opt for 3-hour evening sessions up to 3 times a week. Both day and evening sessions consist of the following components:

  • Individual and group counseling services
  • Focused education sessions
  • Skills groups
  • Self-help participation

Outpatient addiction treatment involves several types of therapies in a variety of formats. These formats can include:

  • Individual Therapy. During individual therapy sessions, patients work one-on-one with a licensed addiction treatment professional.
  • Group Therapy. During group therapy, an addiction treatment professional conducts therapy with more than one patient.
  • Family Therapy. Family involvement is an important component of successful treatment and is strongly encouraged.
