What are the goals of outpatient treatment?

The goals of outpatient addiction treatment are to:

  • Maintain abstinence, while increasing knowledge about substance use disorder and the recovery process.
  • Acquire and build the recovery skills necessary to maintain a sober lifestyle.
  • Increase physical and emotional stability while living a sober lifestyle.
  • Identify life changes necessary for sobriety and develop daily behavioral skills to help manage life changes.
  • Assist significant others in coping with the impact of addiction on relationships.
How long does outpatient treatment last?

How long outpatient addiction treatment lasts depends on the needs of each individual; there is no set length of time. Some people may find a month-long outpatient program provides them with enough time to practice recovery skills and transition to aftercare support. Other people may find that 2-3 months, or more, helps them develop a stronger foundation for recovery.

There are multiple levels of outpatient treatment which allows treatment to be adjusted and tailored to times when more support or less support is needed. Outpatient treatment may also be something a person wraps up and then returns to at a later time should they experience a relapse or if they feel their recovery is in jeopardy. The flexibility of outpatient addiction treatment allows each person to get the level of support they need for long-term recovery.

Can anyone start addiction treatment at the outpatient level?

Starting addiction treatment at the outpatient level may not be ideal for everyone. Although outpatient addiction treatment may provide adequate support for many people, for others, it may not offer enough support for their needs. For example, inpatient care would be more appropriate for a person who is actively using alcohol, benzodiazepines, sedatives, or opioids.

In these cases, supervised medical detox is typically needed which provides 24/7 medical supervision and compassionate withdrawal management. Once detox is complete, a person may transition to inpatient or residential treatment or an outpatient program depending on what is most appropriate for their needs.

It is important for each person to work with a trained medical professional to ensure they receive the right level of care for their recovery needs.

When is admission to outpatient addiction treatment recommended?

Admission to outpatient addiction treatment may be recommended when a person has already completed medical detox and/or inpatient treatment and they are ready for a less intensive treatment program.

Outpatient programs may also be an option for those who have struggled with their use of the following substances:

  • Stimulants (cocaine, meth, amphetamines, etc.)
  • Hallucinogens (cannabis, salvia, LSD, etc.)
  • Inhalants (whippets, solvents, nitrous oxide, etc.)

Each person’s needs vary and addiction treatment should be tailored to where they are in their recovery journey. Additionally, recovery needs change over time and treatment should be adjusted accordingly.

Why would initial admission to an outpatient level of addiction treatment not be recommended?

There are situations when an initial admission to an outpatient level of addiction treatment may not be recommended. One example is when a person is actively using certain substances that pose medical risks when use is stopped. In these cases, medical detox with supervised withdrawal management can offer additional support to ensure a person’s safety.

Inpatient addiction treatment programs offer 24/7 care and medical oversight that an outpatient program does not. Anyone suffering from active addiction to alcohol, benzodiazepines, sedatives, opioids, or a combination of these substances, will typically not be referred to an outpatient addiction treatment program for safety reasons.

Do you need to abstain from drugs and alcohol to attend outpatient treatment at AdCare in Warwick, Rhode Island?

Yes, all those attending outpatient treatment at AdCare in Warwick, Rhode Island need to abstain from drugs and alcohol to participate in the substance use treatment program.

How do I get admitted to outpatient rehab?
