AdCare’s History

With origins in 1975 as a ten-bed alcoholism unit in an acute care hospital, AdCare has since grown into New England’s most comprehensive provider of alcohol and drug treatment. Many achievements and milestones mark our history:

1984

In response to area demand for alcohol and drug treatment, Doctors Hospital is converted from a 114-bed general medical/surgical facility into a full-service alcohol and drug treatment hospital.

1986

Doctors Hospital expands beyond its inpatient roots and opens an outpatient services clinic on the hospital’s campus.

1987

Doctors Hospital is renamed AdCare Hospital of Worcester, Inc. to reflect our mission of providing a continuum of quality alcohol and drug treatment and our vision of developing and expanding treatment services.

1989–2006

AdCare expands outpatient services, establishing fully-licensed clinics in convenient locations throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

2015

AdCare purchases a 46-bed alcohol and drug treatment program nestled in the peaceful New England woods on a 30-acre campus in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. The state-of-the-art facility provides detoxification, crisis stabilization, residential treatment, and comprehensive outpatient services.

2018

In February of 2018 AdCare was purchased by American Addiction Centers and joined its national network of treatment providers.
