About Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

New England Partial Hospitalization Program

Our day treatment program for addiction, called a partial hospitalization program (PHP) outside of Massachusetts, allows you to continue your recovery without residing at an inpatient facility.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP), known as day treatment in Massachusetts, is the most intensive form of outpatient addiction treatment. At this level of care, individuals attend treatment programming for a minimum of 20 hours a week.1

While attending a PHP or day treatment program, individuals live at home and visit the rehab facility for treatment sessions. Typically, sessions run for approximately 6 hours a day and individuals may attend 5 days a week on average.

Much like other levels of addiction treatment, session topics vary and include both group and individual therapy. Evidence-based treatment may involve:2

  • Behavioral therapies.
  • Psychoeducation.
  • Peer support meetings.

Difference Between PHP and IOP

The difference between a partial hospitalization program (PHP), or day treatment, and an intensive outpatient program (IOP) is the intensity of treatment. While a PHP or day treatment program consists of over 20 hours of treatment each week, an IOP involves fewer hours—a minimum of 9 hours of treatment each week.1

It is common for individuals to move between levels of care to ensure treatment matches where they are in their recovery. Some individuals may “step down” from an inpatient drug or alcohol rehab program to a day treatment or partial hospitalization program for addiction.

As a person’s recovery progresses, they may require less time in treatment and move from a partial hospitalization program to an intensive outpatient program.

The Day Treatment Program at AdCare Worcester

The day treatment program at AdCare is offered at the Worcester, MA, outpatient location. Day treatment is offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. A light breakfast and nutritious lunch are served each day, and transportation is available for local residents (living within 15 miles of the treatment center).

The day treatment program is a step down from AdCare’s inpatient addiction treatment in Massachusetts but it provides more structure and support than the IOP and standard outpatient levels of care. By attending a day treatment program, participants can live at home and fulfill their other daily responsibilities while actively working on their recovery.

In addition to attending treatment in person, AdCare also offers a virtual option for day treatment.

At AdCare Worcester, our team of highly experienced treatment professionals focuses on personalized care. Group meetings are kept small at 15 participants or fewer.

What to Expect in a PHP

A day treatment or partial hospitalization program for addiction consists of rotating sessions of behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, and peer-support group meetings.

During these treatment sessions, individuals gain an understanding of substance use disorder, identify triggers, and learn the necessary skills for long-term recovery.

Types of addiction treatment therapies employed include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).
  • Motivational interviewing (MI).
  • Group therapy.
  • Family systems therapy.
  • 12-Step facilitation groups.

How Long Does a PHP Last?

There is no set length of time for how long a person will participate in a partial hospitalization program (PHP). Everyone’s addiction treatment needs vary, and several factors affect how long each person spends in treatment.

Some individuals may find short-term rehab programs paired with aftercare to be adequate for their recovery, while other individuals may need month-long rehab programs or 2-3 month addiction treatment programs.

Customizing treatment to ensure each person has the right level of support for their recovery is a mainstay at AdCare.
